COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORKER – YOUTH

10 month contract – 21 hours weekly

 Unionised Position with benefits 

  Delta Family Resource Centre (Delta) is seeking a Community Development Worker/Youth (CDW-Y) to continue the implementation of the North Stars Youth Anti-Violence Program. This is the second year of a two-year project which was granted to MicroSkills, and is designed to reduce recidivism of adjudicated youth, prevent at-risk youth involvement in anti-social activities; increase employment and life skills; improve leadership skills, communication skills, arts skills, and enhance community relationship between law enforcement officers and at-risk youth.   The CDW-Y reports to the Program Director, and will re-establish linkages with youth and partners created in year 1 of the project, liaising with former clients, community partners such as school administration, Toronto Police, local community agencies, and Probation and Extra Judiciary programs.  S/he will recruit youth, develop and implement program components (e.g. facilitate educational workshops, recreational activities, employment training, mentorship, and deliver anti-violence curriculum). The successful candidate will engage youth, train and mentor them to develop their leadership and presentation skills to deliver youth-led educational workshops to their peers, and use creative arts in work with youth. Candidates must demonstrate a clear understanding of various forms of oppression, including anti-Black racism, and the causes and impact of youth violence.  This is a 10-month contract position (with benefits) and is remunerated at   Position Responsibilities:  

  • Research and develop curriculum materials for information sessions and workshop content
  • Conduct community outreach to promote the program and recruit at-risk youth and adjudicated youth
  • Deliver group sessions to at-risk youth
  • Occasionally support youth one-on-one
  • Conduct Intake and Assessment with youth interested in program to determine needs
  • Liaise with partners and youth leaders to develop a delivery schedule and programming content
  • Create program timeline/work plan, update documents required for reporting and program evaluation
  • Complete reports as required by the funder
  • Ensure that program activities/ deliverables meet contractual outcomes
  • Perform other job related duties as required

Position Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education or training in Youth work or a related field or relevant experience
  • 3+ years of experience related to development & delivery of youth programs, facilitation of youth-led activities, using a variety of approaches and youth engagement techniques
  • 3 years work with marginalised youth and/or communities
  • Established linkages with youth in Rexdale
  • Linkages with youth from the first year of this project a definite asset
  • Must be able to engage youth through various artistic media
  • Strong demonstrated knowledge of anti-racist, anti-oppressive practice (AOP) frameworks, mental health issues, mentorship, and leadership education are required
  • Clear understanding of cause and impact of youth violence
  • Demonstrated understanding of youth issues and settlement issues
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive rapport with youth
  • Established linkages with key partners a strong asset
  • Demonstrated skills in creating new linkages and working with partners
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong oral and presentation skills, workshop facilitation skills
  • Experience building curriculum is required
  • Familiarity with youth justice system
  • Excellent report-writing skills
  • Experience with data collection facilitating focus groups and/or program evaluation would be an asset
  • Ability to establish strong relationship with stakeholders including local police
  • Flexibility to deliver services at various sites and on occasional evenings and weekends.

 

Salary range:$34,370 – $36,912 per annum -prorated with benefits
